Are you a teacher, a parent or a guardian? Whomsoever you are, you are here to know the 10 simple steps to be followed to motivate your child or your student. Let us first understand, ‘What does the term ‘motivate’ means?’ Motivate means to give someone a reason to act in a particular way. This clearly defines that you have to work in a direction where you can give your student a perfect reason to act like a winner.
Career counselling platform is also used to motivate your child or your student. Career counselling is very essential and there are various career couselling platforms which can provide you information on various career choices. You should always look for various careers provided by Career Counselling platform.
we encourage students to use it and Career counselling platforms are freely available and we just need to explore them.
So read on and then imply the 10 steps given below to motivate students.
Step 1: Give your student an objective before every class.
⇒ When you start a class or a lecture, the first thing you have to do is tell the students about the objectives of the whole lecture. For example: ‘Inform them that today we are going to study about natural resources and at the end of the class I will ask you questions based on this.’ Define them your expectations from them.
⇒ Fix certain rules as objectives for them. Giving them an objective in the beginning of a class will make them realise what they have to focus. This will increase their concentration because now they are listening to you with an objective. Tell them: ‘No one can succeed without an objective to win.’
⇒ Guide them to set their own objectives for their life. Teach them to dream big and set their goals. With endeavour, they will start achieving their objectives.
Step 2: Divide your class/lecture into parts.
Once you have given your students an objective, give them a framework of the whole class. For example: Suppose you have to teach about Natural Resources. Then start with, ‘You all have got the objective now. I will now divide this 1-hour class into three divisions: the first 15 minute I’ll give you the introduction to Natural Resources; the next 30 minutes will be covering the uses and protection of these resources. And then I will take an oral test for 15 minutes before the class ends.’
This way you have not only clarified the objectives of the lecture but you have also given them a framework according to which they can focus in the class.
Step 3: Persuade every student to understand the value of Studying.
⇒ You have to find new ways to persuade your student to study. Make him/her understand the importance of education in life.
⇒ Every student should realise that after the class they will gain something crucial. Place examples of inspirational personalities in front of them. Tell them about people from real lives who have achieved success by focusing on studies.
⇒ Explain to them that without education you cannot even communicate and survive in this world.
‘Education is the key to real treasure.’ So if they want to get their identification in this world and achieve something in life, they have to concentrate on studies. They have to value studies as important as food is required for survival.
Once you have convinced your student or your child, ‘What’s the next step to be followed?’ Check the fourth one.
Step 4: Explain them the connection between endeavour and outcome.
Now if you have succeeded in making a student realise the value of education. Then try to give them some examples to help them build a bridge between education and success. You can give examples from your personal experience of life. ‘Without bowing something in the field, you cannot reap a fruit.’ This means without doing hard work, one cannot achieve success in his/her life.
There is a direct connection between endeavour and a good outcome. The harder you work, the more you get. In every class when you define them their objectives, tell them that with hard work they can score good marks in the topic discussed today. This will help them to focus in the class.
Step 5: Start the class with questions to raise their interest.
After giving them the objectives of the following class and teaching them to value education, try this step.
⇒ When you are starting a new topic in the class, start interrogating your students to know how many of them know the basics of the topic.
⇒ Every student is different. They have different mind sets and they learn new things differently. Your way of asking questions should also be different for every student.
⇒ Questioning in the beginning of the class/lecture will develop curiosity in their brains. This will keep them engaged for the whole lecture until they get all the answers. For example, We completely immerse our senses in a puzzle because we are curious to know the answers/solutions to the puzzle. This interests our brain and so we get motivated to find out all the solutions.
Career Counselling Platforms can help a lot. They give enough information about the career so use them as much as possible.
Step 6: Maintain thrill and not the threat in the class. How can you do this? Read the explanation given here.
⇒ You are a teacher and not a demon for your child or student. Remember that you are the only source of true knowledge for your child. He/she can find different sources of learning but these may be virtual sources.
⇒ You can crack a joke amid a lecture to lighten up the environment of the classroom.
⇒ You can select an environment having positive vibes for teaching. Like the school playground or a garden where a student can easily develop his/her interest in studies without the undue pressures of a classroom. Find a place where no chairs and tables force them to sit straight.
⇒ Strictness is necessary but up to a limit that a student can bear. Threatening them with slaps, strict punishments, etc. will do no good. You don’t have to put their moral down.
Cracking jokes, sharing personal experiences, asking them about their hobbies, etc. will keep them thrilled.
Step 7: Give them challenges and tasks.
You have now created a stress-free environment in the class after implementing the sixth step.
⇒ Interact with your student as and when possible. This will help him /her to build up the confidence to share their problems and doubts with you.
⇒ Now it is the time for you to give them home tasks. Give them tasks where they get an opportunity to win. Challenge them to complete the task in a defined amount of time. This will increase both their confidence and speed.
⇒ Announce some small prizes or gifts for the students who complete their task successfully. This will encourage other students to compete against them.
After giving them challenges, you have to encourage your child/student to win it. How will you do this? Read the next step.
Step 8: Inspire and encourage them.
⇒ You can encourage a student by giving them examples from your real life experiences.
⇒ A teacher or parent can inspire their student from their own work.
⇒ You should also maintain an enthusiastic mood in the class to provoke the interest of the students.
⇒ Help them find their field interest. If they know their field of interest, they get encouraged as and when a topic related to that field is discussed.
⇒ Inspirational quotes can be announced by you at the beginning of every class. ‘Success is a state of mind, if you really want to succeed, then think and act like a winner.’
Step 9: Give them opportunities to succeed.
⇒ A student can get exhausted when he faces failure again and again. You have to frame new opportunities for such students where he/she can taste the sweetness of success.
⇒ When a student wins something or scores the highest marks in his class, he gets the motivation to achieve the same again and again.
⇒ Make sure that every student of your class gets an opportunity to win. You can do this by making test papers with varying difficulty levels. The level of difficulty can be increased gradually as the student starts upping his/her ante towards winning the previous goals.
This way you will help a student to overcome the anxiety of failure.
Do climb the next stair. The most important step, step 10 is waiting for you there.
Step 10: Always praise their achievements.
It is very important for you to praise a child for his achievements. You can praise him for giving gifts or prizes. Awards and certificates help a student to realise that he/she will keep on achieving the praises from elders and friends if they will work hard and harder. Celebrate their success in the class with joy. Applaud for their achievements. This step will give a great kick to your student/child for moving towards success. Praise always helps them to get motivated and more focused on their studies.
At last teach them, ‘If you want to shine like sun, you have to burn yourself like sun.’ This was quoted by Dr Abdul Kalam. You can make them learn the importance of hard work which made Dr Kalam shine like the sun.
I hope you must have understood all the steps above. Being a parent, teacher or any elder you understand the importance of motivating a student. So try to follow these 10 simple steps. Implement them in every class/lecture. Whether you teach a primary class student or a college student, these steps are worthy enough to motivate a student of any grade.
Lastly, try to be enthusiastic while teaching. And give your students thrilling goals to maintain their interest in their studies. Try to implement these 10 steps and motivate your students for their bright future.
