4 Reasons Why Students Need Technology

Posted by Edu4sure team

Learning gives creativity, creativity leads to technology, technology empowers thinking, thinking provides knowledge and the knowledge makes you great." These inspirational quotes by Dr. APJ Abdul kalam define the importance of education & technology in one's life.
The modern education equips children with the skills necessary to find jobs and help advance their country's economy.

The purpose of this article is twofold : one is to address why technology in modern education is so important and the second is to address how technology in modern education has helped us.

When I think about past, in a country like ours learning & education simply meant face to face lectures, teachers reading the books or printed papers,  students taking notes and writing in a big A4  size notebook.

"Technology can become the “wings” that will allow the educational world to fly farther and faster than ever before—if we will allow it." - Jenny Arledge

At that time education, learning and teaching were considered impossible without a teacher and even if you have a simple doubt then still you have to go to the teacher to solve it.

But it has been promised for a long time that technology will change education for better - make it more affordable and accessible. In this modern education system, computers and Internet have become extremely important. There are various online certification courses in India which are helping a lot.

Computers can store a large amount of data in a very small space , reducing the entire bulk of reference books down to a single CD of data. On the other hand, Internet serves as magic for students worldwide.

Technology has played a vital role in education as it helps to clear our doubts. We can easily search for any topic and it's a golden truth that in today's world bookish knowledge is not enough. Now students don't need to go to their teachers for small doubts & queries, they can just use the Internet and the problem is solved.

I think one of the most exciting aspects of technology in modern education is its use for designing creativity. In the classroom, virtual whiteboards have replaced blackboards allowing teachers to provide more student oriented content. Now we can create so many types of content written, audio, video, 2D & 3D.

Apart from these nowadays we can create music, we can create photo's and we can conduct new new experiments and after creating this content we can use technology to present our ideas whether it be online or in person and that's how technology has strengthened its roots in our education system.

E-learning and Distance learning

Education system in India is changing, the another aspect of modern education is distance and E-learning. Teachers nowadays doesn't need to be present physically to help and solve their students problem. E-learning offers the ability to share material in all kind of format's such as videos, PowerPoint sideshows, word documents and PDF's.

Nowadays mostly every university in India has its own E-learning portal and some of them also provide the facility of online classes. No one could have imagined this thing 15 years ago but then the internet happened and rest is history.

The students these days are well known about the use of a smartphone, PC's, text messaging and using the Internet so participating in online courses has become a very simple affair.

Another popular thing these days is the trend of distance learning and the reason for growing importance of distance learning is its flexibility to the learner.
Distance education courses are basically correspondence courses that individual can obtain their studies by not attending regular classes.
These students don't need to be present at the college or attend any lecture but still the degree will be very same as awarded to regular students.

"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." - John Dewey

The best thing about technology is that its never afraid of changes and the fact is our life doesn't get better by chance, it gets better by change. There is a great importance of innovation in education, in this modern education system students are so fast forward that they don't even need PC's or laptops because only one tablet or mini pad with Internet connectivity is enough for everything.

I take my iPad mini all along with me in my college and it helps me in lots of ways like I can record my whole lecture as a video clip plus I can Google anything I don't understand. Wikipedia is serving as messiah for students worldwide and thanks to this modern technology education has gone from passive & reactive to interactive &agressive.

1. UPDATED INFORMATION - I recently read an article that reported Students using 10 year old textbooks in school and I was like no man , you (school's) can't do this to our future generations. Yes , I know that updating textbooks can cost lots of money and do significant damage to budgets but there is already a solution to this problem and it's called "technology".

Such institute or schools should provide their students latest technology such as computers, classroom mobiles or tablets which are updated and creditable source of better learning. Of course these things cost a bit but it's a one time investment and these technology is cheaply upgradeable from time to time.

2. VISUALISATION - The latest trend of learning is " learning by seeing ". As we know that images are always more catchy then reading a paragraph. People tends to learn faster when they learn through visuals or images.
Schools nowadays show their students some inspirational movies through projectors and other sources of technology.

Even those kids who don't have started their schools play video games and other learning games on their parent's smartphones or tablets and that's the main reason kids these days are so advance at a younger age. I remember playing Super Mario and contra when I was very young and I have realized that those small things were very important in my growth as a 21st-century student.

3. TIME & MONEY - Money is always an issue in education and Yes,Technology can help. We can use electronic forms instead of paper, emails instead of printed memo's,  electronic textbooks and thousands of free online resources to save lot's of money and give students excellent learning experiences and there are so many free online certification courses in India to help students. Teachers can also use technology for developing their knowledge by attending virtual seminars & conference's (most of them are free) and it will save both time & money for them.

4. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT - Parental involvement is a very important factor that can increase students growth & achievements. Most parents these days have extremely busy schedule and can't always help their children with homework or attend parents meetings. Again technology can help. Parents can go to class website and see what thier child is working on,  they can contact teacher via emails & instant messaging.

Nowadays through online systems, you can check your child's attendance and even grades while sitting on your couch or office desk and These systems are pretty much simple and a common man can easily use them.

" There are no morals about technology at all. Technology expands our ways of thinking about things, expand our ways of doing things. If we're bad people we use technology for bad purposes and if we're good we use it for good purposes." Herbert Simon

When used properly, technology in the field of modern education can be a very powerful weapon that can help us in -:
- engage & challenge learners.
- checking students overall growth.
- providing students with practice.
- more of parental involvement.
- saving both time and money.
- providing students updated & latest information.

Well , it's evident that technology has changed students perception about what he/she can do and it has also helped teachers to prepare their students for the real world environment. Some teachers fear that technology will replace them in near future but the fact is technology won't replace teachers but teachers who use technology will probably replace teachers who do not.

In the last 15 or 20 years, there has been a revolution in the field of education. Things are changing and believe me things are changing for better. I'm not saying traditional way of the study was bad , but I'm damn sure that the learning level has grown and we can feel that kids these days are lot more advance and fast.

My cousin's son is only 8-year-old and he knows how to operate iPhone 6. When I was 8, I hardly knew anything about mobile devices and this small example shows us how technology has reached to each one of us.Yes , there could be some negative aspects. These devices  ( PC's ,tablets & mobiles) could distract your attention from studies.

For example, sometimes I start playing games during a lecture :) but then again as its always said that it's up to you, how we use technology. Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master but anyways technology is the inevitable future of modern education.
