What is and How to Be a Voice-Over Artist

Do you know Tamil? No. But you still watch South Indian Movies and love watching Tollywood. Now you will say you watch with subtitles but there are many who watch south movies without subtitles and enjoy watching it. This is because the movies are dubbed in another language like Hindi or English. Many English movies are dubbed into another language. There may be instances when just a part is dubbed or so.


You all must have also noticed that the words are printed on the screen and there is a voice that can be heard but the person cannot be seen or in the beginning of the story there is a narration by a person who may be a celebrity and you can actually recognize their voice. All these are dubbing and voice-over techniques. The entertainment industry is growing faster and becoming bigger than before.

 The coming of technologies and techniques to carry out work has become easier. Career counselling platforms hardly tell you about the career opportunities in the dubbing field and that it could be taken up as a profession. But yes you can view dubbing/ voice over as a profession.

Dubbing/ voice over artist is required in the television industry, film industries. News channels and many more areas where they are suitable. Areas like video games, the internet, text to speech also look for dubbing professionals. These industries hunt for rich, powerful voices.


What is Dubbing?

Dubbing / Voice over is a narrative technique in which unseen element lines

are heard over visuals. Dubbing is done for various reasons when the actor does not know the same language or you require to place the few lines first then the visual, telling the background story etc. There is a slight difference between dubbing and voice over.  Voice over artist gives voice that accompanies the visuals or advertisements. Dubbing artist gives voice according to the onscreen performance of the actor or even animal characters in animated films.

IPhone Users can relate to this. The voice of Siri is an example of dubbing or the voice you heard in the cartoon Doraemon, Nobita is all examples of Dubbing and Voice Over.


Eligibility

There is no specific qualification to become a Dubbing/Voice over artist. Your educational background does not count. You can be a dubbing/ voice over artist if you have a great command over the language. Strong, powerful, clear voice and have the ability to mold it according to the character, situation etc. Singer Lata Mangeshkar can modulate her voice to that of a child, male, female.

♦ Voice Clarity, Diction, Punctuation, Pitch and along with these traits you should have excellent lip sync, dialogue delivery, emotions, timing, tone and the list is quite endless. The artist needs to have the correct body language, use of appropriate gestures to get into the character

How to choose a career in Dubbing/ Voice over 

No formal courses are there for this field. But exceptions are always there. The boom in the industry has come up with certain institutes or schools providing training in Dubbing / Voice over. If you want you can join these schools. They train you in voice modulation as it is the essential factor.  Apart from the training that you will receive from the schools. You can work on your voice and enhance it. Constant practice, voice exercises. Talking with people, learning languages, observing people how they talk, style can make you a good dubber. For dubbing artist, it's important to get into the shoes of the character completely.

The best way to start is by recording your voice and listening to it over and over again. Look for deficiencies. There is various dubbing/voice over software that can be useful to you. Make other people listen to your work and try to improve. Maintain the clippings of all what you have recorded. Keep your best one.

 Prepare your portfolio and CVs. approach recording studios that need Dubbing/ Voice over artist, television, news channel and show them your work. Give auditions. You can find a job online also. Many approach online website and choose candidates. Make your online presence, upload your recordings, exploit contacts and finally, you will land in a job.

 You can get a good job if you work hard and improve your skills. If you are ready to learn you will shine as an artist and then the sky's the limit.


Job Prospects

Dubbing Artists can work in Television and production houses. They can also work in News channel where they require voice over and they will give you a chance to do it from them. The opening of many new channels and more of English shows give opportunities to the dubbing/ voice over artists. You can work on documentaries, CDs, programs etc.


You can either work as a full-time dubbing/voice over artist or part time. The choice is yours.


Salary

The salary of a Dubbing/ voice over artist is flexible and varies on choice, independence. Some of them work on contract basis and some work on daily basis. Salary also depends on the organization you are working with.  As a beginner, you could get Rs. 1000 to Rs.1500 per episode. If the role is complex and you are required to dub for a longer duration you could earn around Rs.10000. E- learning is paid per hour or per page. It could be around Rs. 600 or Rs. 700 per page or hour. Pay scale in the industry is more. You can earn between Rs. 25000- Rs. 50000 depending on the work. A fresher can earn between Rs. 15000- Rs. 25000 and a highly experienced one can get between Rs.75000- Rs. 1.5 lac.


It's all about exploiting the opportunities and making your mark. As it is pure talent based. More talented you are more you earn. So it's all in your Voice, I must say.
