News Design as A Career

Posted by Edu4sure team

One of the most important thing in someone life is "Career" and we are fortunate to have enough career counselling platforms but it is hard to have a better career counselling platform where we can get enough information. However, some career counselors can help you too. So always try to reach those career counselors and have a better idea about the career choices.

It was in the middle of 80’s I completed my Graduation and moved to Delhi for higher studies.

Constant Upgradation is the key to success in a competitive environment - Edu4Sure

At that time, computers were just introduced to our work culture. So like everyone else, I too joined for a computer course in Delhi. It was a one-year diploma program in computer applications. They taught us dBase, Fortran, Cobol, and C Program. It was too technical for me. I wanted to do something creative! So went for Desk Top Publishing! Learned Photoshop, Pagemaker, Ventura and Freehand Drawing.

Before I proceed, I would like you to check my profile. Who I am ?

While working at India Today Group for the Computer’s Today Magazine we practiced magazine page layout on Macintosh machines. I remember it was the first model of Mac! The Classic!! A monochrome screen in green.  The technology updates happened so quickly that we had to catch up with it. Lot many new graphic design software packages were launched. New versions of Photoshop got real attention among the Magazine Designers.A lot of learning was happening on job!

From India Today I moved to The Indian Express.  A total change in size and substance. Magazine to Newspaper. Though the basics remained same the styles changed. Deadlines narrowed down drastically. The platform also changed. Macintosh machines being costly, newspaper publishers preferred Windows PCs.  Ventura and Pagemaker give way to QuarkXpress. A very user-friendly page making system.

In the beginning of 2000, a new trend emerged in newspaper and magazine publishing. And they called it Infographics! Information converted in graphical format. Readers started loving it. So the editors started insisting on more infographics.

Have you ever tried any career counselling platform? We make sure it would help you a lot in choosing the right career.

I have worked on may redesign projects for newspapers and magazines. Our team used to work on multiple design options and present it to the core committees. They will study the redesign options and often come up with a wrong selection! That one design we had worked on without much thought process and pain got selected! Why was it so? We all used to get confused about it. But when I analysis it now, I could sense the reason clearly. Every individual thinks differently. Something that you think is the best could be the worse for the other! Especially in the case of design!!

Slowly things started changing. Digital media got into focus. The Internet gave everyone an option to explore anything and everything for free. Social media became the powerhouse. With the 4G bandwidth, digital media demanded quality content.

And now the time has come to realize the fact that you need to be techno savvy to survive in this tough competition for quality content. The World has become a global village! Upgrading your skill levels has become most important. For that, you need to find a great mentor who is willing to share his knowledge base. Finding such a person is very difficult in this selfish world! They are the rare breed!

Some Edupreneurs ( Entrepreneurs in Education) still look for people whom they can mentor because an edupreneurs gets connected with the students better than anyone else. However, a mentor is a mentor and can be from any background. I would suggest to connect with this rare breed and learn from them.

As we have found Digitalization is happening at various level and corporates also looking for people who are ready to adopt such skills. In today's competitive world, One must be able to quickly understand the things happening around.

Today I have taken many sessions on Graphic Designing in various workshops conducted by Edu4Sure and also work as an Independent consultant. Visualization impact is more than text and even more than videos too. I myself keep update on various designing skills.  My suggestion to all of you is to keep learning things as per requirement by the industry. For example, people who are not able to understand Digital media are more prone to job loss. Also, the growth chances become lesser.

But how to do that?

In the free time like holidays, always look for workshops/ corporate projects where you may learn the skills and keep yourself updated. You may find mentors and get telephonic guidance.

"My Career My Experience" initiative by Edu4Sure gave me chance to share my views and I thank the team which is constantly trying to improve the  education awareness to the society.

Career Counselling Platforms can help a lot. They give enough information about the career so use them as much as possible. You should always look for various careers provided by Career Counselling platform. we encourage students to use it and career counselling platforms are freely available and we just need to explore them.
