Industrial Engineering and future prospects

Posted by Edu4sure team

Industrial engineering, though being a stream of engineering is related to management of the Industrial process. The name seems to be confusing for many as people consider it to be related to a manufacturing industry. However, it is related to grasping, developing and implementing systems by involving humans and other resources. It teaches about managing the resources such that they are used in an optimum manner. Subjects taught in this field of engineering include mathematics, physics, product design and Development, logistics, production planning and inventory control, Operation Research, Quality Control, etc.

Usually, this course is most effective master of engineering (M.Tech) level. Industrial engineers are suitable for any industry. This might include manufacturing, planning, consultancy, software, logistics, supply chain management, etc. There is a big opportunity for higher education in Industrial Engineering in the field of supply chain management, Operation Research, Inventory Management and Intellectual properties rights.

Science is about knowing and Engineering is about doing. - Henry Petroski

The industrial engineer provides the key to achieving the goals of management. Unlike engineers in other specialties, the industrial engineer is primarily concerned with increasing productivity through the management of people, the methods of organization and the availability of technology.

It is basically the integration of machines, production materials, money, staff and scientific methods. While many current industrial engineers still deal in these areas, the scope of their work has become more general. Today's industrial engineers work in many more industries than just factories. In the recent years, fields like IT and energy have become mainly reliant on the skills of industrial engineers. These versatile professionals may also be employed in banking, utilities, media or even hospitals.

Core Companies:

All manufacturing and engineering companies offer jobs to Industrial engineers. Some of these companies are TATA (all sectors, Motors, Steel, Communications..etc), Reliance Industries ltd., Maruti Udyog, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, etc. Some of the government originations like Railway, BSNL, ONGC, ISRO, etc also appoint Industrial Engineers.

Salary: Average salary is around INR 2.5 lakhs to INR 3.5 lakhs per annum.

Institutes offering Industrial Engineering courses:

1.  Few IITs
2. Almost all NITs
3. All Top Engineering
Colleges in India
4. Many State
Universities and Top private engineering colleges

Let me tell you exactly the work industrial engineers are destined to carry out. They find ways to discard wastefulness in production processes. The devising of efficient systems that integrate workers, machines, materials, information, and energy to make a product or give away service.

Duties performed by the industrial engineers:

♦ Review engineering specifications, production schedules and other information to understand methods that are applied to the activities in manufacturing

♦ To determine how to manufacture parts with maximum efficiency

♦ Enact quality control procedures to resolve production problems

♦ Design systems to coordinate activities and ensure products meet quality

♦ Ask clients about product details, purchases from vendors, manufacturing capabilities and staff about status of projects

Skills of an industrial engineer can be applied to many different situations ranging from manufacturing, health system to administration. They design systems for work such as:

♦ Shifting of heavy parts within manufacturing plants

♦ Disseminating of goods from company to client and finding places to locate

♦ Evaluating job performance

Industrial engineers basically focus on getting the work done by managing time, the number of workers, available machinery and other factors keeping in mind the work environment, worker safety, less cost and maximum efficiency. They find ways to reduce waste and improve performance by studying the conditions. Applying their calculations and methods to the information system and fulfill the criteria and meet the requirements. The variety of operations done by the industrial engineers make them versatile and engage them in activities useful for businesses, government. They also find application in supply chain management to reduce cost, maintain customers base and maximize efficiency.

According to the data Industrial engineers held about 241,100 jobs in 2014.  The fields that take industrial engineers and the percentage is as followed:

♦ Computer and electronic product manufacturing 13%

♦ Machinery Manufacturing  9 %

♦ Aerospace product and parts manufacturing 8 %

♦ Motor vehicle parts manufacturing 6 %

♦ Engineering services 5 %

Wow! That’s quite an impressive number.  This directs to the popularity of the course as well as the scope and benefit of doing Industrial engineering. Depending on the job type nad task either they work in offices or in settings they are trying to improve. They may also require traveling to places to observe the process, make assessments in various settings.

Work Schedules: Industrial engineers work full time. Depending on the work type, company, projects in hand the working hours may differ. Industrial Engineering is a multifaceted job and the employment is projected to show little or no change which is a good sign.  Going by the data, the information given to you about the industrial engineering will help you to make informed choices in future
