JEE (Main) Exam Pattern

IIT JEE exam is one of the toughest and the most prestigious exam in India for passionate engineering aspirants. The pattern of JEE has changed a few times from the very beginning. It is essential for every student to have a great understanding of the changed pattern of JEE in order to succeed. Being equipped with the latest exam pattern and staying updated is required by all the students. The exam you are appearing it demands your attention to the details of it.  

Exam pattern requires the most attention. Exam pattern defines the makeup of the question paper of JEE. The number of sections, a number of questions in each section, the marking scheme, the total score and many other related questions. Why knowing exam pattern is so important? Well, exam pattern helps you prepare for the exam accordingly and if you have an idea about the expected question paper, it makes your preparation easy and it gives you a sense of satisfaction.

Eligibility for the IIT JEE

♦ Candidates appearing in (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination, must secure at least 60% (55% for SC/ST and PD) marks in aggregate in their respective Board Examination.

♦ A student can have only two attempts to write the JEE in the year in which he or she passes the XIIth standard examination and/or in the following year.

♦ Candidates who join any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi, and ISM, Dhanbad through JEE will not be permitted to appear for JEE in future.

The pattern of theIIT JEE:
At present, the IIT JEE is a single - stage objective type examination consisting of two papers of a time duration of three hours each to test the comprehension & analytical ability of the candidates. Both papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2, each has three separate sections of Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics.
All questions are of objective type, designed to test the aptitude, understanding and analytical ability of the candidates.

More details about the exam pattern of JEE paper 1 for engineering students

♦ Time given to students to complete the exam will be of 3 hours (180 minutes)

♦ The question paper will have total of 90 questions

♦ The paper will be of total 360 marks

♦ Each correct question is allotted 4 marks

♦ For each incorrect question, one-fourth (1/4) marks are deducted.

♦ Negative marking is done

♦ There is only one correct response for each question among the four response. Choosing of more than one response will be treated as wrong response and marks will be deducted for the same.


Detailed information about the exam pattern of paper 2, the paper for architecture

♦ Part I has 30 objective type questions from mathematic section and 4 marks are allotted for every correct response

♦ Part II the aptitude test consists of 50 objective type questions and 4 marks are given for the correct response

♦ Part III consists of 2 questions of 70 marks to be attempted on a separate drawing sheet.
