So May is over and board results are out and there is hustle among students to get in a particular college or university of their preference. Over lakhs of students appear for class 12th every year across India and number is increasing rapidly.
Now that the results are out there is very little time left for the students to relax as there is a rat race going on for the admission in a good college and there is a cut throat competition to secure a seat in the course of preference.
When you ask kids in India what they want to become in their life most of them will answer either a Doctor or an Engineer.
There are several common application for undergraduate college admission in India which makes it difficult further as the competition gets tougher. Well, there are several misconceptions among parents, teachers, and students as well if a child scores well in their boards they are considered intelligent and somehow it becomes mandatory for the kid to pursue some course which is considered elite in India.
For example, It is expected from a science stream kid who has scored 90 percent to take admission in a good engineering or MBBS college and a commerce stream 90 per-center to take admission in B.Com or CA courses in a well-reputed college.College admission process steps are also followed in such a way that these things can be noticed everywhere.
However, what here most of the people fail to understand is that just because someone has scored well in the exam, it does not really mean that the student will excel in the field of engineering or medical too.
Many students apply every year for JEE, AIEEE, AIIMS, NEET AFMC (the list is quite long) exams mainly due to parental pressure than due to their self-interest. As a result, even though they might be able to get through IIT's, NITs, Medical Colleges despite this, their grades begin to fall catastrophically and they begin to lose their self-confidence. Career counseling for students is required, to know what they really want as their career.

Career choice is really an important decision that one has to make in their life and a wrong decision can ruin one's life. Such decisions should neither be based on the high academic grades, nor on what parent and peers are saying, and nor based on the common stereotypes followed and ongoing trends in the society.
Knowing what I am made up of, who am I, what am I best at, what am I bad at, what is my personality, what type of attitude do I have, what interests me etc, really helps in making better decisions about one's choice of courses during graduation and post graduation, and ultimately, taking up the best career later.
So what one can do?
Once you passed your school, you look forward to enjoying the college life. However, this exhilaration to enter the new zone of life is combined with the anxiety of choosing a course for graduation.
Here are few guidelines to choose what is best for you
1. Remain in the chosen stream
If you had PCM In 12th you can opt for many professional courses like engineering, architecture, design, Information Technology. There are pure sciences degrees too in physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics etc. If it was PCB you can go for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BVMS.
There are a lot of interesting options are available like BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiology, Medical Imaging, forensic sciences or one can go for pure sciences like Botany Zoology etc.
If you had commerce you can go for B Com, BBA, B Com, LLB, Economics Hons, Bachelor in Business Economics or you can boost your skills in the financial sector. If you took humanities you can go for BA and other arts related courses.
2. Appear in an entrance exam
Most of the best colleges in India take their admissions through entrance exams only. According to your stream in 12th you can sit for various entrance exams. As the number of applicants is generally very high many universities use entrance test as selection criteria for most of the courses in medicine, engineering, law, design etc. Even if you want to join banks, civil services or Armed forces you have to clear exams like IBPS, SSC, NDA etc.
Career Counselling Platforms can help a lot. They give enough information about the career so use them as much as possible.
3. Change the stream and choose a higher education
Many Colleges in India allow switching the streams in colleges but with some restrictions. Like switching from science to commerce in possible but from commerce to science is not possible.
So, one should ideally explore the colleges and courses and carefully look for the eligibility criteria to make the right decision at the right time.
4. Choose a professional course
Most of the professional courses admission is done through the entrance exam only. Other than medicine and engineering there are other courses like Law, Hotel Management, Designing, Mass Communication, Management etc which one can choose to make his/her career in.
5. Choose a vocational course
There are many vocational courses like Travel and Tourism, Office administration, language experts, photography, fisheries, mechanical works also offer good chances to for many.
These courses are according to person’s hobby so most of the times they love to pursue these courses. These courses are easily available in colleges and generally, no entrance exams are required for them.
6. Have a backup plan
There are very limited seats in most of the courses and there are many takers, admissions are very competitive, whether it is professional courses or the others it totally depends on the number of seats which is quite less. So, even if you are best suited for the course, admissions are not guaranteed.
Competition is cut throat most of the time it’s not easy to get in so you need to have some alternative options just in case you don’t get what you wanted. Like if you don’t get a medical college you can still opt for allied sciences like Nursing, Lab Technician etc.
Don’t stress on it set backup plan and reach your career goals.
Essential to choose right path
It is very important to choose a right course, especially after 12th because it is the stepping stone towards your career, so whatever course you choose, it must be in accordance to your passion. The career course you choose after the completion of your 12th decides what and where you are going to be in your future.
Stop, breathe, and think before you select a course! The course you select for graduation is the first one in your life so must be critically examined. For example, if you want to become an Architect, then you must opt for Bachelor in Architecture. Also, the course you choose must assure a good scope for career options.Select a field that has chances of growth in the future over the one which has a strong possibility of progress. Many students not able to decide or they do not have the proper guidance on which course to choose or which course is suitable for them.
Because of this, they end up with choosing any course which they regret after doing. So choosing a right career course after 12th is very important.
So to choose a right course, one should be aware of the different courses available and also what the courses are all about. Countercheck all the details about the course and its significance in the industry.
College courses often correlate with career, therefore it should not be decided on haste.
