My Experience As A Chemineer

Posted by Edu4sure team

Like any other girl, I’m done with my intermediate with a very good score. As I always felt that I’m very good at physics and chemistry, I have dreamt of being a chemical engineer. I needed career guidance and I took several online career counselling test. My score made my dream come true. I finally managed to join the most reputed university i.e. ANDHRA UNIVERSITY (A.U).

Note: One of the most important thing in someone life is "Career" and we are fortunate to have enough career counselling platforms but it is hard to have a better career counselling platform where we can get enough information.

You’re not the same individual you were a year ago, a month ago, or a week ago. You’re always growing. Experiences don’t stop. That’s life.

However, some career counselors can help you too. So always try to reach those career counselors and have a better idea about the career choices and career counselling platforms are freely available and we just need to explore them.

My first day at A.U. started by meeting two of my old friends. One from my secondary school and the other from intermediate .As I found them there, I did not feel new to college. That day we attended a seminar. The only sentence from the whole seminar, that cropped up my mind is that ‘being a chemineer, we don’t need to study much about chemistry, but it is all about physics and mathematics’. So, my first day at college ended with the seminar and that single sentence in my mind!!

From the second day, there would be an introductory part at the beginning of every session. This made us exchange our thoughts and details. I started to get friend requests in facebook from my classmates. From here my journey started as a chemineer.

Firstly, I would like to tell you about the reputation of my department and college. A.U is the first college in India to start the chemical engineering branch. By god’s grace, I have become a part of this great university after 79 years of chemical department establishment. It is the biggest department among the others in A.U. It was opened by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan in the year 1963. It is built with stones. A.U. gives us the freedom to develop in every aspect of our life. It doesn’t restrict us only to academics.

My first-year chemical engineering syllabus is same as that of intermediate. Being a naughty girl from my childhood, I would often get scolded by the professors. But I haven’t shown my naughty attitude in studies. Being a fresher, it’s time to talk about “RAGGING”. Actually, the word ‘ragging’ added a lot of joy and human relations to my life. The bond between our seniors and us became very good by the effect of ragging. They advised us in every aspect of our journey. Then all my classmates have planned for a PICNIC. We thought of various places at Vizag but finally switched to Kailasagiri, a hill station in Vizag. That day, we enjoyed to our fullest. But, after that trip, there were clashes between many of my friends. It was a sad thing. Then the most awaited department games have arrived. We had a lot of fun playing badminton, throw the ball and many other games. Frankly speaking, my first year ended only with gaming!!

Career Counselling Platforms can help a lot. They give enough information about the career so use them as much as possible and you should always look for various careers provided by Career Counselling platform. we encourage students to use it.

After the vacation, we were back to college with many new things to share. The real chemical engineering subjects started then. People were found in the corridors of library carrying books like chocolates! i.e. in bunches. I think I’m the only girl who haven’t visited the library till then. Coming to the way of teaching of professors, they would teach us in a very skilful way, so that we don’t switch off our attention from listening to them. They would quote many live experiences, so that we get inspired by them. This shows their experience in teaching. In second year first semester, we used to attend a physical chemistry laboratory. There we used have many chemicals to handle with. One fine day, one of my batch mates have accidentally spill some concentrated hydrochloric acid on her. It made all of us to be cautious with the chemicals. Various safety measures should be taken, like wearing eye protection, hand protection and several other personnel protective equipment while dealing with chemicals. With this experience my second year first semester had completed.

Coming to the second semester of the second year, it is the toughest of all the semesters in my four years of chemineer life. But it was my favourite semester. There would be rarely a professor to teach us during this semester. Fortunately, this had been a plus point in our career. It made us learn the habit of self-study, which is the major tool for one’s growth. We have gone through semester exams and finally arrived at the vacation. I, being bored of holidays, planned for an industrial training at Vizag steel plant. Being a Vizagite, I could easily go through the training. As the plant is so big and there is no permission for any private vehicle to enter the plant, we used to walk for miles to reach the coke oven plant, which is assigned to us. In this training period we have seen many processes in the manufacture of steel. It added a bit to my knowledge. The coke oven plant would be full of dust. So, every day we would return home with dark faces!

The next comes the shortest third year. We felt the third year be very small, as, most of the time we spent organizing various workshops like mineral processing etc. As I already mentioned about the department games, that year we are the organizers for the games. It provided us with a lot of fun. It also made us learn the leadership qualities.

At the end of the third year first semester, I have again planned an industrial training. This was from Hindustan petroleum corporation limited at Vizag. Here we have learned many things regarding the crude oil and the products derived from it. It involves many mass and heat transfer operations. So, it added to our chemical knowledge.

After third year, I took career counselling quiz then joined GATE COACHING at Vani institute in Hyderabad. The coaching went on, without any flaws. Coaching period is forty-five days it was a CareerBuilder coaching. As the period is too short, the classes would commence from 8:00 A.M to 5:30 P.M everyday. That was the first time, I experienced the hostel life. As, I went with many friends, it was full fun. Sometimes, if we found the subject to be boring, we used to get out of the class and roam on the roads of Hyderabad. We visited Charminar, Golkonda, Birla temple, Lumbini park, IMAX, City center, NTR gardens and many other places. This period made me learn individuality by staying away from my parents. I am back to home after forty-five days and this time I was struck by the viral fever. May be due to the hostel food. But I soon recovered from it.

After the coaching, I again planned an industrial training at Coromandel international limited at Vizag. Here I could learn about different grades of fertilizers and their manufacture. This is my third industrial training experience. All the three helped me to shape my subject in different angles. I would like to thank my university in this context, as no other college would encourage these many industrial trainings.

Then I finally reached my final destination i.e. final year of my chemineer life. As soon as we are in the final year, it’s time for campus recruitment. Every week there would be atleast one campus drive by the software companies like IBM, WIPRO, INFOSYS, ACCENTURE etc. As I am always keen about the chemical engineering subject, I’m not interested in software jobs. So, I did not attend any of the software company campus drives. I just concentrated on GATE exam preparation and the chemical subject. The subject in the last year is completely different from what we have learned in the past three years. It is all about process modeling, dynamics, its control, and optimization. We also get a brief summary of all the corners we studied in the past three years.

January had arrived and it’s now the time for GATE exam. From the past four months, I have been preparing for it, by cutting all other fun and focussing on it. I managed to attempt very well. I have secured an all India GATE rank of 1665. Soon then, we arrived at the final semester exams. Being enthusiastic from the beginning, I have passed with a CGPA(cumulative grade percent average) of 9.17/10. I am one among the top five, in my department. Everyone say that chemical is a difficult branch. But I never felt any difficulty regarding the subject, since I enjoyed a lot being a chemineer in A.U.

There were many opportunities before me as a chemical engineer. As I have a good GATE rank, I have the chance to join M.Tech in IIT Guwahati. But my AIM is to work for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). This was an inspiration from one of my cousins. She studied chemical engineering from A.U. and now she is working for HPCL. So, I rejected the M.Tech opportunity. At present, I'm in search of a good chemical related job, so that it will be an experience to achieve my aim.

So I suggest you be a Chemineer, as we can see many people who have trodden on good paths, being a chemineer. I'm very happy to share my experience being a Chemineer. A.U. has taught me many good habits and paved the best way to achieve my aim. There were some people who have encouraged and helped me to be successful. I heartfully thank them.
