Courses like Computer Science and Electrical Engineering are ‘most wanted’ on the IIT campus. However, there are many offbeat courses available in the IITs. These courses are largely unexplored and in the areas where expert hands are always required. Career counselling platforms can help you a lot. They give enough information about these courses so use them as much as possible. Here are a few offbeat courses you should take a look at:

IIT Bombay
♦ B.Tech Engineering Physics – The department offers a 4-year B.Tech. program in Engineering Physics. From the academic session 2005-2006, the department also started two dual degree programs, namely, B.

If you want to shine like a sun. First, burn like a sun. - A.P.J Abdul Kalam

Tech-M.Tech. in Engineering Physics and M.Sc.-Ph.D. in Physics. These are popular courses with great career opportunities.

IIT Delhi
B.Tech Textile Technology – This program is offered by the Department of Textile Technology, IITD and encompasses courses such as Yarn Manufacture, Spinning Processes, Fibre Structure and Analysis and Intelligent and Functional Textiles. This department, being the only one of its kind in the IIT system, bears the additional responsibility of providing the road map for the growth of other Textile Institutes in India. Budding career option. Seek career guidance on this and make a career in it.

IIT Guwahati
♦ B.Tech Mathematics and Computing – The Department of Mathematics IIT Guwahati from its very inception in 1995 has aimed to be a center of excellence in mathematics and computing. The course content is exotic with topics ranging from Real Analysis and Matrix Computations to Stochastic Calculus for Finance and Monte Carlo Simulations. The students are prepared for a career in software, finance or research. Career opportunities in finance, research has always been in huge numbers so this can be a good option for students. Career counselling platforms can also help you a lot with information.

IIT Kanpur
♦ Integrated MSc – IITK offers MSc in Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Chemistry. These programs are highly reputed and are meant for students with an aptitude for research in the Pure Sciences. These courses provide sufficient background for further research work in their respective fields. IIT-Bombay also provides a few Integrated M.Sc. courses.

♦ B.Tech Agricultural and Food Engineering –  This program is offered by the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering, IIT-Kharagpur. The department is one of the oldest of its kind in the country, having been started in 1952. IIT Kharagpur
♦ B.Tech Energy Engineering – The four-year program in Energy Engineering trains students in the principles of Electrical Technology and other related subjects, such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics, Engineering Drawing and Graphics and Programming and Data Structure. This is followed by training in the fields of Computer Organization & Operating Systems, Computer Based Energy Conservation & Management, Thermodynamics, Digital Electronic Circuits, Energy Resources & Technology, Analog Electronic Circuits, Power Electronics & Drives, Electrical Machines, Solar Energy Technology, Power Systems, Heat Transfer, Energy Conversion Processes, and Non-conventional Electrical Power Generation.
The course list is highly interdisciplinary with courses ranging from Analog and Digital Circuits and Heat Transfer to Solar Energy Technology and Non- Conventional Electrical Power Generation. Energy, being highly talked about nowadays, offers numerous prospects in reputed firms like Reliance, GE etc.

IIT Madras
♦ B.Tech Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering – It covers aspects of Ship Design and Marine Structures. Some of the topics covered are Strength of Materials, Ship Structures, Ocean Hydrodynamics and Marine Engineering. Several laboratory courses such as Computer-Aided Ship Design and Drafting, Applied Mechanics Lab and Ocean Engineering Lab give a hands-on experience to the student. There are two projects and an industrial training program. The job prospects range from oil companies such as BPCL and Schlumberger to design and engineering companies like L&T, BHEL etc. This course is also offered by IIT KGP.

IIT Roorkee
♦ B.Tech Pulp and Paper Engineering – The course has been designed to prepare candidates for taking up challenges of managing process industries in the current competitive business world. The course curriculum is rather broad-based laying enough emphasis on basic sciences, process technologies, engineering design, economic analysis, and management concepts.
Reliance Cellulose, AP Paper Mills, and Century Paper Mills are some of the recruiters.

These IITs offer courses beyond the traditional engineering courses that we all know and have been studying for ages. These offbeat and specialize engineering courses offered by IITs of different states are hot career options. You just need right career planning to make a career in them. Try to explore out of the league and do something Hatke. These are not only some new courses but are worth studying while they promise secure future for every aspiring engineer. Kab tak sab wahi civil engineer ya software engineer bante rahenge. When we have the opportunity to try a myriad range of courses a then why not try hand at one and make it popular as the previous one.

The reason behind them being no so popular is the lack of awareness of the existence of this course, fewer students opting for it, less faculty, and fewer students making a career in it and excel in them.  If students start studying this course, there will be more improvement and development in this field and aspiring students will consider this as a career option instead of computer engineering.
