Posted by Edu4sure team

Are you the one who is passionate about getting into a profession where changing lives of people or rather I must say saving lives of people is a daily routine? The one who is willing to put other’s interest above his own? Who wants to fight against destiny and dares to attain the status equivalent to that of GOD in the society?

Yes! You guessed it right. I am talking about one of the most respected professions in the world – DOCTORs. As you continue reading this blog, you will realize that this is nothing short of a Career Counselling Platform for you where you can get answers to most of your questions regarding who is a doctor, what is his role, how and what all are the steps required in the journey of becoming a doctor.

Medicines can cure, but a good doctor's inspirational words can give the strength to fight from within....

To put it in simple terms, I would like to draw an analogy. All of us must have used one or the other machine/ equipment in our lives and would have gone to a mechanic to fix it whenever there was any issue and it didn’t work properly. Similarly, a Doctor is a mechanic who is capable of fixing the most sophisticated yet the simplest working machine on Earth-Human Body.

Career Guidance is of great importance with regards to this field as the decision of becoming a doctor has to be taken at a relatively early stage in life; unlike other professions. One needs to decide early and choose the subjects (science- preferably Physics, Biology, and Chemistry) accordingly in their high school education in order to get into this field.

While most people realize that it takes a long time to become a doctor, relatively few fully understand the process of medical education and training and hence, I will now give you a step by step approach to help you realize your dream of wearing that white coat with the stethoscope around your neck.

The first step even before starting is to know the eligibility criteria:

1.    Eligibility Check

To be able to join an MBBS Course, one must have Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as their main subject and score at least 60% marks. Again, a good Career Counselling Platform can prove to be a savior here as it not only informs you about the criteria but also helps you in fulfilling the same by rolling out useful tips.

2.    Clearing Medical Entrance Test

The most difficult and important step in order to realize this dream is to clear one of the many entrance examinations conducted both at the state and National level. Many of these exams are held in the months of May/June and these examinations are considered to be highly competitive. Though the pattern of each exam may vary, all of them are of objective type only containing questions on the subjects of English, Physics, chemistry, and biology. Some of the exams are as follows:

a)    All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS MBBS)

b)    All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT)

c)    Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC ENTRANCE)

d)    BHU All India PMT

e)    CMC-Vellore

f)    Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute University

g)    Dr. D.Y.Patil University (AIET)

h)    Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences

i)    Krishna Insitute of Medical Sciences University

j)    Manipal Uget Karnataka

In addition to the hard work and persistence, what distinguishes one aspirant from another is their knowledge about the various exams and specific and dedicated preparation for the same. A good career counseling platform at this point of the journey is of great importance as it provides you all the required information at one place.

3.    Result:

After the exams, the merit list of the successful candidates who are eligible for admission is declared by the respective board of examinations. For the final selection, the candidates are called for counseling by the concerned authority; where one has to go for the submission of certificates, course fee, physical tests etc. At this stage too, Career Counselling Platform can save the day for you by helping you prepare for the interaction which will be held at the respective colleges.

4.    Getting into a good Medical College

Medical colleges in India (all private as well as government medical institutes) follow the eligibility criteria prescribed by their respective university for admissions. However, in general terms, the candidates seeking admission to a medical college is given admission on the basis of the marks obtained in the competitive examinations conducted at the central or state level and marks obtained in the final examinations of Std. XII. Below is the list of top 10 medical colleges of the country as given by India Today (18 June 2016):

a)    All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi

b)    Christian Medical College, Vellore

c)    Armed Forces Medical College, Pune

d)    Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi

e)    Grant Medical College, Mumbai

f)    Lady Hardinge Medical College New Delhi

g)    King George’s Medical University, Lucknow

h)    Kasturba Medical College, Manipal

i)    University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital, New Delhi

j)    Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore

Every year many students take help of various career counselors across the country in deciding upon which medical college they must join and start their journey of becoming a doctor from.

5.    Different Courses Offered

Medical colleges offer bachelor’s degree courses like MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) in various fields i.e. microbiology, pharmacology, pathology, toxicology, and others. Other health care courses in India include B.A.M .S.-Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery, B.N.Y.S.- Bachelor of Naturopathy & Yogic Sciences, B.H.M.S.- Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery etc. The aspirant needs to make sure his field of study and start his degree accordingly. In a case of any confusion, the aspirant can take help of any professional career counselor in order to make the right choice.

6.    Completion of Degree

MBBS program is a 5 ½ years course divided into three professionals of three semesters each. A semester comprises of 18 months. A wide range of subjects like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, general medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, ENT (ear, nose, throat), gynecology, orthopedics as well as preventive and social medicine are taught. The last 1 year is devoted to compulsory rotating internship-only after completing which the intern receives the title of “Doctor”. Once this is done, the intern needs to get himself registered with the Indian Medical Council, or any State Medical Council, so that he can practice as a Medical Officer or a Junior Resident in any government or private set up.

I know many of you might feel that this a long process and might even get a little demotivated but do remember that in order to get into the noblest profession on the planet, you will be required to turn over a few stones. It is the profession that gives you a lot of respect in the society. The power to heal has placed the medical profession several rungs above all others and hence, it takes a lot of hard work, dedication and persistence to excel in this field.

Also, remember that the life of a doctor is not easy. It is a 24-hour job as you do not know what emergency can come at what time of the day. You not only need to cure the patients but also listen to them, understand their pain and take care of them as well as their family. Doctors play an important role as they are the only ray of hope for people who are suffering from deadly diseases and that is the reason why this job involves immense satisfaction. To conclude, I would like to say that though the road to becoming a doctor is long and difficult the joy and contentment that it gives on saving a life make this journey worthwhile.
