What is pharmacy? Pharmacy by definition is the science dealing with the collection, preparation, and standardization of drugs. Pharmacy or we call them “chemist” or “medical store” in India is the type of store where we can get medicines and medical things. And the person who manages this entire is said to be known as “pharmacist”.

Pharmacists are the professionals in the field of healthcare who practice in pharmacy or medical store. They are involved in all aspects of medicine delivery to patients. Their main work is to prepare all the medicines and package of medication that a doctor has prescribed. They also sell medication over the counter of their store. Pharmacists will explain what your medicine is for, how it works, what to expect when taking the medication and what to look out for.

Understanding how to take medicines is very useful if you don’t understand it properly then it may lead you to dangerous consequences of your health. If you don’t understand any aspects of your health condition your pharmacist will be well placed to help you, but sometimes not always.

A pharmacist may be based within a hospital or healthcare facility or at a community pharmacy, for example, like you have seen that there are some of the pharmacy stores inside or outside the hospital and some of them are away from the hospital like near to some society or some locality. They will have a degree in Pharmacy and degree means that some may have a degree at graduation level and some have at post-graduation which provides them with a good and enough understanding of the biochemical mechanisms of drugs, drug uses, therapeutic roles, side effects, potential drug interactions, and monitoring parameters. They will guide you and tell you about the side effects of those medicines. Pharmacists play a very important role in the field of medicine. They are the link between the doctor and the patient in many ways.

Now as I told you what is the pharmacy and the role of pharmacist but one questions which come in our mind is that how to be a pharmacist. What are the educational qualifications we need for being a pharmacist? Which exams i.e. entrances exams, which degree I need to have for being a pharmacist? Career opportunities in this area? In the upcoming paragraphs, these all answers will be answered.

First of all i.e., the first step is that making up the mind. This means that if you want to work in a medical field, then only you should opt out for pharmacist course otherwise not. So, first of all, make up your mind and then decide whether you want to do this or not. Becoming a pharmacist, like becoming a doctor, is not easy. One needs to have complete knowledge about everything that is related to medicine. It will take a lot of hard work and long hours of study to reach there but once you are there, there is no stopping you. So go ahead and do exactly what is on your mind, help people fight all those diseases.

The second step is the research step of about educations i.e. what are the qualifications needed for it and then go for it. There are various courses in which a candidate can choose. He/she can either opt out for a diploma or they can go for a proper degree. First of all the applicant should have attained the age of 18 before apply, then only he/she can apply for it.

Then there are two ways by which a candidate can apply for this. One is diploma and second is degree. For this Candidate should have completed his/her 10+2 schooling with biology, chemistry, and physics as the main subject with a minimum % age of 50%. After fitting in the main criteria of education candidate can apply for higher education.

Then they have to give an entrance test like various state exams.  They need to give these entrance so that they can good college because if you are doing pharmacist from a low-grade college than you won’t be able to get good knowledge and not that exposure which you will get from top notch colleges. So it’s better to give exams than going for low rated college.

Here are some of the top-notch colleges of pharmacy in India.

For all this colleges, one has to go for an entrances exam which means one can appear for entrance exam and according to the marks one can decide to go for any all these colleges and others.

After all this, the candidate has to decide in which course he/she wants to apply.

The first course is D.Pharma which is a diploma; the candidate has to fulfill the above conditions then only he/she may go ahead of course. For D.Pharma, one can give various exams that are held by the state or specific colleges which usually take place in April-May and the results come out in June-July.  Some colleges also select students on the basis of their 10+2 percentage. After going through this 2-year course the pharmacists have to undergo training which is sometimes provided by the colleges or one could get into a nursing institute to get trained. The overall fee for this diploma comes out to between 50,000 at government colleges to 1.5 lacs at a private institute. This fees may vary minor with little margin.

The second course is B.Pharma which is a degree, in which candidate can apply for it by fulfilling the required conditions.  For B.Pharma, one has to appear in exams like CPMT which are held by the state or by some medical institutes, some institutes also offer seats based on the percentage in 10+2. After a three year degree and a practical training, one could look for a job in a hospital or open his/her own chemist shop. The overall fee for this degree ranges between 30,000 in government colleges to 2-3 lacs in a private institute.

After completion of these courses, the candidate will have the license from the government to set up a pharmacy store and they are allowed to practice as a pharmacist. There are various career prospects after completion of these courses. They can work under the doctor like as a pharmacist on a commission basis otherwise they can opt out for their own store also. After college one could start working in a hospital or a laboratory (own store) at around Rs. 15000 per month, which will increase gradually as one gains more experience or with higher qualifications. Being a pharmacist is not that easy. It’s quite tough as one has to get knowledge of so many medicines and drugs.
