Why I Did Internship At 15

Why Internship, Internship in Startup

Since a long time now, several people including my own family members have come up to me and asked me the same question, “Why are you doing an internship at this age?

First of all, there is NO age to do or not do an internship. An internship is taken up to enhance your skills and learn new things and as is said, learning has no age. Some people do internships to gain knowledge about specific kind of work, some do it to enhance their skills or learn new ones, while others might do it for some extra pocket money. But my reason was a little different. Whatever your reasons may be, doing internships is never a bad idea and never a waste of time.

But the question was, why an internship for me?

I had my summer break going on and just like any other teenager, I was bored and wanted to do something productive.

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

What better than an internship?

So I started looking up the internet for virtual internships. Scrolling up and down, I started losing hope. I thought that maybe, in India, internships for teenagers was still a big thing. But then, just as I was about to shut my laptop off with frustration, I came across my dream internship in a startup, as a content writer. I have always loved writing and being a blogger and content writer for a company was one of my goals that I was yet to achieve. I remember that moment, as I was reading the details of the internship, I knew that I just had to get it. It was SOOO good! blush I filled up the internship application and waited for a few days. And then, I finally got the reply and was hired as their blogger and content writer.

The whole point of telling you guys this is that go out and do what you really like and don’t think about what others do or what is supposed to be done. I love writing and this was one of the main reasons for taking up this opportunity. You know, at one point even I thought that I should just skip doing all this because I even had to keep up with school work and all, but my passion for writing made it possible for me to handle everything. You automatically learn qualities like patience, time management while doing internships so this is another reason why you should do internships.

Ralph Waldo Emmerson has quoted these thoughts beautifully by saying,

“Do not go where the path may lead,

go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

And at last, I was given my first topic to write on. I wrote it with all my heart and guess what? Everyone really liked it! When you do something you like so much, it feels so good. That feeling can’t be described through words and especially for an ambitious person like me, it was a really huge deal. It was that time when all the questions “Why an internship?”, “At such an early age?” started making sense and I knew I had made the right decision. I wouldn't say that I felt good proving other people wrong, but yes it was good to do something that others almost made me feel was impossible. This is one of the main reasons why I highly recommend an internship in start-ups. This is because each intern and team member is given so many responsibilities that help you learn more than you can ever learn while working in an MNC.

Even the people I was working with were so helpful and supportive. They encouraged me at every step which gave me so much confidence. There is absolutely no better feeling than being praised for doing what you love. This could not have been possible without their support.

Do you think I would have ever met such amazing people if I had given up? No, right?

This is why you just have to go out and explore and ignore all the people who discourage you. So, if you want to really learn how to handle real-life situations and improve your soft skills in the best way, internships in startups is the way to go!

This might sound hilarious but I really feel that there is this voice inside every person, that tells you the truth no one else does. That voice knows you better than anyone else and it’ll tell you if you will be able to do it or not. Always follow this voice and frankly, take risks. I am not talking about the huge risks like hanging from a cliff or going into a tiger’s den (haha laugh). But take risks by getting out of your comfort zone, experiencing new things and doing what seems impossible.

Create and embrace your own path and, HUSTLE HARDER!
