For a long time now, several people including my family members have come up to me and asked me the same question, “Why are you doing an internship at this age?
First of all, there is NO age to do or not do an internship. You take up an internship to enhance your skills and learn new things since learning has no age.
Some people do internships to gain knowledge about specific kinds of work, some do it to enhance their skills or learn new ones, while others might do it for some extra pocket money. But my reason was a little different.
But the question was, why a blogging internship for me?
I had my summer break going on and just like any other teenager, I was bored and wanted to do something productive. So I started looking up the internet for virtual internships. Scrolling up and down, I started losing hope.
I thought that maybe, in India, internships for teenagers were still a big thing. But then, just as I was about to shut my laptop off with frustration, I came across my dream internship in a startup, as a content writer.
I have always loved writing and being a blogger and content writer for a company was one of the goals that I was yet to achieve. I remember that moment, as I was reading the details of the internship, I knew that I wanted it badly.
It was SOOO good! I filled up the internship application and waited for a few days. And then, I finally got the reply and was hired as their blogger and content writer.
The whole point of telling you guys this is that go out and do what you like. Don’t think about what others do or what someone has to say about your work. I love writing and this was one of the main reasons for taking up this opportunity.
You know, at one point even I thought that I should just skip doing all this because I even had to keep up with school work and all, but my passion for writing made it possible for me to handle everything.
Ralph Waldo Emmerson has quoted these thoughts beautifully by saying,
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
And at last, I got my first topic to write on. I wrote it with all my heart and guess what?
Everyone liked it!
When you do something you like so much, it feels so good. That feeling can’t be described through words and especially for an ambitious person like me, it was a huge deal.
It was that time when all the questions “Why an internship?”, “At such an early age?” started making sense and I knew I had made the right decision.
I wouldn’t say that I felt good proving other people wrong, but yes it was good to do something that others almost made me feel was impossible. This is one of the main reasons why I highly recommend an internship in startups. This is because each intern and team member have so many responsibilities, in return, it helps you learn a lot more than working in some reputed companies.
Even the people I was working with were so helpful and supportive. They encouraged me at every step which gave me so much confidence. There is no better feeling than someone praising you for doing what you love. This could not have been possible without their support.
Do you think I would have ever met such amazing people if I had given up? No, right? And this blogging internship showed me the right career path too.
This is why you just have to go out and explore and ignore all the people who discourage you. So, if you want to learn how to handle real-life situations and improve your soft skills in the best way, internships in startups are the way to go!
This might sound hilarious but I feel that there is this voice inside every person, that tells you the truth no one else does. That voice knows you better than anyone else and it’ll tell you if you will be able to do it or not. Always follow this voice and frankly, take risks.
I am not talking about the huge risks like hanging from a cliff or going inside a tiger’s den (haha). But take risks by getting out of your comfort zone, experiencing new things and doing what seems impossible.
