While many kids later drift on to other dreams and ambitions like astronomy or sports, a significant number remain fixated on this idea of being able to help people and save lives. An MBBS or other dental course is rigorous and there might be a time when a person wants to change his/her field. So what are the other career options for Doctors?  

It takes a lot to become a doctor. Hours of studies at a stretch sitting at a place and mugging the complex words. After all this struggle also, people are not satisfied with the “Dr” prefix and want to break the chain. 

A study conducted in 2010 by The Physician’s Foundation suggests that around 40% of doctors planned to give up their original career field. Instead, they chose to retire or pick up a non-clinical job. But, being a doctor is not the only profession you can have with a medical degree. Many are unknown to this fact. As yet another branch of science, medicine ties in with a whole range of other fields.

Other career options for doctors

1. Forensics

  • For the people who grew up as diehard fans of Sherlock Holmes and Nancy Drew, this is an ideal choice.
  • Doctors who pick their careers in forensics analyze bodies and specimens collected from crime scenes.
  • Needless to say, these are closely tied in with investigations and you would have to deal with your fair share of law.

2. Law

  • If one has sufficient knowledge in law as well as medicine, one could take up a career as a Medico-Legal Advisor.
  •  So while seeking other career options for doctors, an MLA comes in as a savior includes things such as negligence claims, other investigations or fatal accident inquiries.
  •  The MLA must advise the client on how to proceed with their case and help them prepare their defense.

3. Teaching

  • If the classroom is where one likes to be, teaching is one of the other career options for doctors.
  • Even the medical field needs educators to help transfer knowledge and bring for the next generation of doctors.
  • Teaching, in itself, is a noble career and will also keep you on your toes. As you have to keep updating yourself and your knowledge about the current affairs of all that is happening in the medical world.

4. Journalism

  • Studied medicine but have a true passion for words? Then medical journalism is the career one could opt for.
  •  Medical journalists record and bring forward advancements in the medical field.
  • Considering, one’s pre-existing knowledge in the medical fields, one will be able to understand and write with sufficient depth.

5. HR

  • Recruitment is a very important job in any field and it is so in the medical field too. As someone with a medical degree, you will know better than most, the requirements for a candidate to be a good physician.
  • With this job, the hospital chains and other companies who require the services of doctors will hire you. A physician recruiter is one of the lucrative other career options for doctors. 

6. Sports Medicine

  • If sports interest you, so will sports medicine. Pretty much every sport needs physicians and medical staff.
  • Not just to deal with sports-related injuries but also for keeping tabs on players’ health throughout the season.

7. Research

  • While working at the front lines in dealing with patient care is important, what is of even more importance is working towards finding cures and remedies for the disease which can be used for patient care.
  • Medical research as a career involves that. The job involves conducting clinical trials and researching chemical compounds and the effects they have on the human body.

8. Photography

  • Medical photographers use their creativity and photography skills too, you guessed it, take pictures of the human anatomy.
  • These photos and videos not only help patient care but also help in textbooks and health publications.
