How to Improve Your Reading Score

As mentioned before, the Flesch reading ease test checks two things to determine your reading ease score: the length of your sentences, and the length of your words. The shorter your sentences and words, the higher your reading ease score. So, to improve your reading ease score, you should shorten your sentences and limit long, difficult words.

1. Shorten your sentences

Research has shown that using too many long sentences makes your text difficult to read. Let’s take a look at an example:

My favorite place to visit during weekends is my grandparents’ house near the lake, where we love to fish and swim, and we often take the boat out on the lake.

You’ll notice that it’s confusing to read this sentence, because of its length. It takes a long time to process the information presented in the sentence. Breaking the sentence into two or more sentences can make your writing more clear and interesting:

My favorite place to visit during weekends is my grandparents’ house. It’s near the lake, where we love to fish and swim. We also often take the boat out on the lake.

See, this sentence is much easier to process! Using short sentences keeps the subject clear. Also, it allows your readers to absorb the information your presenting. So, try to break down long sentences and your text will be much easier to read.

2. Do not use Difficult words /Jargon

If you use too many difficult words, you might scare off your readers. Words with four or more syllables are considered difficult to read, so try to avoid them where possible. For example, try words like small instead of minuscule, about instead of approximately, and use instead of utilizing.

If you want to reach a broad audience, you should also try to avoid using jargon, or insider vocabulary. If you’re a medical expert, you’re probably familiar with terms like analgesic, intravenous, and oophorectomy. However, try to keep in mind that most people aren’t. Avoid insider language when you can. If you can’t find a better alternative, make sure to explain users who might not know the word.

3. Use Headings/ Subheadings wherever you can

Headings guide your readers through your text. It’s hard to read a piece of text with no headings to break it up. This is even more true for web copy, as reading from a screen is difficult. People get easily distracted and lose track of the story you’re trying to tell. Headings and subheadings are the most important signposts for the reader.
People tend to read headings more carefully, using them to work out what an article is about. So, subheadings should indicate what a paragraph is about, or people won’t know what to expect. Headings will help people stay on track and grasp the message of your post.

Headings affect SEO

Although it’s probably not a ranking factor, headings do affect SEO. That’s because headings are important to help users understand the subject of an article. If readers use headings to figure out what an article is about, Google will too.

Doubt: What if I do not find Headings/ Subheadings?

Answer: Usually you will be able to do. In case you do not find then try to add some sentences and give it a heading/subheading.

Example:

Edu4Sure teaches Digital Marketing in 8 days workshops which happens on weekends. It teaches the tools used in Digital Marketing and there is no theoretical knowledge. Every tool is run by the experts and learners practice it.

You read the context and found it is talking about how edu4sure takes workshops.

Now for the above, heading/ subheading can be:

Practical learning

Edu4Sure teaches Digital Marketing in 8 days workshops which happens on weekends. It teaches the tools used in Digital Marketing and there is no theoretical knowledge. Every tool is run by the experts and learners practice it.

Always try to write with Headings/ Subheadings in Simple and Short para.

Structuring your headings

You might have heard of heading tags. These are HTML tags that are used for the creation of headings. The most important tag is the H1 heading tag, which is usually the title of a post. Heading tags have a top-down hierarchy from H1 to H6.

So, your text should start with a main heading H1, and this heading can only be used once per article. Other headings can be used multiple times, as long as they follow a hierarchical structure. H2 is for subheadings of H1, H3 is for subheadings of that H2, et cetera. Let’s take a look at an example:

H1: Potato chips are awesome
H2: Why potato chips are awesome
H3: Potato chips come in a lot of different flavors
  H3: Potato chips are crunchy
  H3: Potato chips are cheap
H2: The best potato chips ever
H2: Where to buy potato chips
  H3: Online stores
  H3: In your hometown
 H2: Wrapping it up

How to improve your subheading distribution?

So, what to do if you get an orange or red bullet in the Yoast SEO plugin regarding your subheading distribution? Well, first of all – and this is quite obvious – don’t forget to use subheadings! Also, you should try to create a subheading for every separate topic in your text. This could be for every paragraph, but also a couple of paragraphs discussing the same topic.

4. Use Fillers

Use filers wherever you can.  It helps in making content engaging with the readers.

Example of Fillers are: Any Idea?, Isn’t it?, Let’s do it!, But why again? etc. There can be any number of fillers. We should just understand how are they used?
Example Paragraph:
I know trust is very important in a relationship but what is more important is stability. After a time, trust comes after stability. I looked at him and he agreed. He somehow was still confused. He went to his home and called me back to meet again the next day. I met her the next day. He was looking nervous. He ordered something and we were sitting together. I was waiting for him to start the discussion.
Now, check the same para using Fillers. I know trust is very important in a relationship but what is more important is stability.
Any Idea?
After a time, trust comes after stability.
Isn’t it?
I looked at him and he agreed. He somehow was still confused. He went to his home and called me back to meet again the next day.
But why again?
I met her the next day. He was looking nervous. He ordered something and we were sitting together. I was waiting for him to start the discussion.
If you see, we used 3 fillers in the paragraph. You can do as many as can if these fillers/ transition words make the content interesting to read. Usually, we use the fillers in long lines ( If we have 6 lines para and want to break in 2 then we can use 1 filler). If it is still not clear, please call us at 9555115533

5. Content must be Unique

Uniqueness can be checked after writing the blog using the link

6. Use Images

If you are using images then use relevant images only from the sites which can be used for commercial use. Example: Pixabay or free images/Royalty-free. It is not mandatory to use images. Images link can be taken from your mentor.

7. Write in ACTIVE VOICE

Try to write in an Active voice as much as possible. The passive voice is BAD for readability and SEO. Only 10% can be used for passive voice. This is a Very Important point. Write in Active voice as much as possible.

8. Use only black color text

You can bold if you want to highlight something. Do not use any other color text. Keep it simple.

9. Transition Words

Transition words make it easier to read and understand a text. And readability is very important for SEO. Although transition words don’t influence your SEO directly, they are one of the key factors to readability.

For example

Let’s explore the power of transition words with an example. Text A contains no transition words. But, Text B is the same, only we’ve added transition words to make it easier to read.

Text A: I’m going to discuss a few reasons why practice is important to learning skills. The only way to truly master a skill is by actually doing what you’ll have to do in the real world. I think practice can be a fun way of putting in the necessary hours. Some people will disagree. It is said that people tend to remember only 10-20% of what they’ve heard or read. That number rises to as much as 90% when you put the theory to practice. Following up an explanation with practice is key to mastering a skill.

Text B: In this paragraph, I’m going to discuss a few reasons why practice is important to mastering skills. Firstly, the only way to truly learn a skill is by actually doing what you’ll have to do in the real world. Secondly, I think practice can be a fun way of putting in the necessary hours.

There are, however, some people will disagree. Thirdly, and most importantly, it is said that people tend to remember only 10-20% of what they read or hear. Moreover, that number rises to as much as 90% when you put the theory to practice. In conclusion, following up explanation with practice is key to mastering a skill.

Text A is not a terrible paragraph. However, the differences are clear as day. Text B does a better job of showing there are three separate arguments to support the statement with a definite conclusion. The reader never has to wonder whether a sentence still belongs to the previous argument or a new one.

Moreover, it even shows the relationship between sentences within one argument. Therefore, people are going to find it easier to read this text and will stay on the page longer. And this is just one short, conveniently arranged paragraph!
