Introduction New Education Policy 2021

2020 saw a revolution in education in India. Schools and colleges were pushed to modernize and take their day-to-day functioning to the digital platform. Although it was a challenge in the initial phase. But it showed us that our education system is capable of adapting to the evolving modern world. So, the New Education Policy (NEP) in 2021 is an essential step towards India’s education moving forward.

The change comes after 34 years of stagnancy and aims to truly represent the 21st century. Moreover, NEP emphasizes the integration of newer technology into our education system. Post-Covid, India has seen the rise of EdTech. Basically, NEP’s focus is on digital education bringing Indian EdTech start-ups to the spotlight. Changes in Syllabus in the NEP

New Education Policy 2021 has suggested a complete reform of K-12 and college education in India. The 10+2 structure of schools has changed to 5+3+3+4. Basically, this change has been made to ensure that all children are allowed to learn right from their early stages. NEP has also come up with significant changes to the syllabus. 

1. Medium of Instruction

One of these is the inclusion of regional languages in the medium of instruction. So, it is a major step that reflects the core idea of NEP. This is to bridge the learning gap caused by teaching in a language that is inaccessible to a large part of our population.

2. Vocational and Skill-based Courses

Another important feature of the new policy is that there will be compulsory courses for vocational and skill-based learning from the sixth standard onwards. The introduction of vocational classes at the school level will allow students to get exposure to different vocations at a young age and to see vocational careers in a more positive light. 

3. Multidisciplinary Learning

New Education Policy 2021 gives students more flexibility in the choice of subjects without having to limit themselves to the traditional Arts, Science, and Commerce classifications. This flexibility will extend to higher education as well. Students will get admission to multi-disciplinary institutions, with options to choose subjects from a mix of disciplines. One aspect of this change is the creation of the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC).

The bank will provide each student with an account and a unique ID to access it. Students will deposit their credits into their accounts as they go through courses. They have the freedom to choose courses from any institution that is a part of this program. If they wish to take a break from their studies, they will be able to hold on to their collected credits.  They have the option of returning after a period to earn the remaining credits. 

Role of EdTech Companies

The new system of education is characterized by flexibility in its structure. It will make education more experiential, integrated, and student-centric. To believe in this holistic approach to education, India will need to build on its existing digital infrastructure for education.

At present India has over 4000 EdTech start-ups competing in the market. NEP has opened up more possibilities for these start-ups, making the market even more attractive and predicting even higher competition.

There are a few elements of the NEP that have substantial implications for EdTech. 

  • A regulatory body called the National Education Alliance for Technology (NEAT) will be set up to make important decisions regarding integrating technology into education. The main aim of the body is to make education more experience-based and personalized using AI. Experts suggest that NEAT will seek an alliance with EdTech in India to achieve its purpose.
  • Another implication results from the decision to include regional language in the medium of instruction. This is a good chance for start-ups to utilize their local resources and provide their services to people seeking content in local languages. EdTech players can provide various solutions like friendly interfaces, interactive games, pre-recorded lessons, and course material in regional languages.
  • Next, coming to the Bank of Credit system for higher education.  Given the facility for digital learning, students from tier-2 and tier-3 cities will have an excellent chance of getting an education from the country’s best institutes. EdTech is the answer for smaller institutes that may lack the budget to function efficiently on a digital platform independently. There is also the future possibility of EdTech themselves becoming a part of the Credit program and offering courses to students. This would allow them to reach tier 2 and tier 3 markets more effectively and expand their customer base.

EdTech has a lot to gain from the new policy, but the reverse is also true. It will contribute significantly to making the transition from the old system to the new system smoother.

Challenges

NEP is an ambitious move. There are certain hurdles it needs to cross for successful implementation.

  •  The introduction of new courses including skill-based and vocational courses requires experienced and knowledgeable staff. As you go more and more away from metro cities, the quality of teachers slips further down. There are enough cases every year about the sad state of teachers in India to know that this will be a major challenge.
  • There is a lack of physical infrastructure to be able to increase the current Gross Enrolment Ratio by a hundred per cent, as is the goal of the new policy. To some extent, EdTech can be a saviour here by providing e-learning capabilities to increase classroom numbers.
  • E-learning is a significant part of NEP. However, the pandemic gave an accurate picture of the digital reach in India. Many students lack the means to access the most basic e-learning platforms. India will need to build its digital infrastructure substantially to make digital classrooms inclusive for all students.
  • NEP’s flexible format calls for multiple languages as the medium of instruction and multiple educational content providers. It will not be easy to control the quality of education in such a situation.
